Food Insecurity In The USA (And How You Can Help)

September 9th, 2020

Did you know that about 14 million children in the US are not getting sufficient food to eat?

Between 22 and 38 percent of the US households are estimated to be food insecure right now.

This isn’t a small number by any means.

We all need to extend helping hands and reach out to as many people in need as possible in whatever capacity.

What Can You Do to Help?

  • One of the first steps is to educate yourself about food insecurity in the USA; in your state in particular. More awareness of the subject will help you become a better hunger relief advocate.
  • Donating money to your local food bank and food pantry is, of course, a popular way to help the cause. Google “food pantry near me” and donate any amount to people who are doing good work in elevating hunger.
  • But money-donation isn’t the only way. You can even donate your time. Volunteering a couple of hours every week at your local food bank can be very helpful. You can serve meals, stock shelves, or bookkeeping. There are many tasks that you can take up at the food bank or food pantry based on your skills and interest.
  • Getting other people to join the cause is a big help as well. After all, the more the people, the better it is. So, talk to your friends and family members. Talk to people in your circle on social media. Create awareness around food insecurity in the country. Encourage them to get involved in the cause.

People Need You (And Not Just During Holidays)

There are several other things you can do to make a difference. Like donating the needed items, instead of money, directly to the food bank and pantry.

There are many items you can give; rice, peanut butter, whole-grain cereal, canned vegetables, canned fish, canned meat, canned beans, granola bars, nuts, pasta, and canned soup.

You can even get together with your friends to collect (healthy) leftovers from the hotels, restaurants, and parties, and transfer them to the food bank or food pantry.

So, again, even in your capacity, you can do a lot to help in the cause of food security in the USA. You can help these people with their healthcare as well; many of them usually require medical attention. You can navigate them to a good community healthcare clinic that offers quality service; Google “community clinic near me” to find one such establishment in your city or town.

In the end, you must remember that these people are hungry not just during the holidays but round the year. So, instead of setting out to donate just during Christmas and Thanksgiving, while still appreciable, isn’t sufficient.

It’s important to stick to the cause throughout the year and not just during the festive season.

A lot of people need your help to stay fed, alive, and healthy. Fortunately, there’s a lot you can do to help them.
