4 Easy Steps To Floss Like A Pro

July 25th, 2019

Virtually everyone wants white, strong, healthy teeth. But are you willing to put in the effort required? It’s as simple as brushing twice and having a dental floss once daily.Flossing involves the use of a piece of string to eliminate Plaque and food particles that are not removed by brushing. These particles if not removed, may lead to gum disease and tooth decay. The American Dental Association recommends flossing, once daily.

To get a suitable floss, you can check the dental section of your local pharmacy, grocery store, or drugstore. Examples include pre-measured strands, floss picks, waxed/ unwaxed, spongy, and so on. Also, check your choice for ADA seal of acceptance.

Effective Flossing Steps

  1. Pull out about 18 inches of dental floss from the floss dispenser. Wind the floss around your middle or index fingers, leaving an inch or two of floss to work with. Then grip the floss tightly between your thumb and fingers.
  2. Place the floss between your teeth. When the floss reaches the gum line, create a C shape and gently work up and down on both sides of your teeth.
  3. Make strokes with the floss on each side of your tooth, by rubbing the floss against the side of your tooth to clean it. Be gentle on your gums and never snap the floss on the gums.
  4. Work the floss against the back of your teeth to clean them as well. After you floss, rinse out your mouth with water to remove any stray particles and trash all used floss.

Note: it is normal to feel slight unease when you first start flossing but don’t throw in the towel. With continuous flossing and good dental hygiene, the discomfort should stop.

If you experience persistent bleeding or pain that doesn’t stop after a few days, visit a nearby dentist. Like other things in life, no need to overdo it. Just be thorough yet gentle while you floss your teeth. Go now and floss like the pro that you are!
